Former Harrison County Deputy Charged In Williams' Death

Criminal charges have now been filed against one of the Harrison County deputies on duty the night Jesse Lee Williams, Jr died in the jail.

The U.S. Attorney has filed federal charges against former Deputy Regina Rhodes. The charges include assault, violating Williams' civil rights, writing a false report and making false statements to investigators after his death.

On the night of February 4th, Williams was allegedly beaten to death at the hands of Harrison County jailers.

Rhodes, Ryan Teel and Deputy Morgan Thompson are named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of the Williams family. That suit seeks 150 million dollars in punitive damages.

Harrison County's coroner ruled the death was a homicide, though the charges against Rhodes are the first since Williams' death almost six months ago.

Former Deputy Rhodes was terminated April 11th. Ryan Teel resigned from his job at the jail in March.

A federal judge has delayed the wrongful death lawsuit brought by the Williams Family. Judge Robert Walker cited the ongoing criminal investigation as the reason he delayed the civil suit.
