Kids Enjoy Last Blast Of Summer Before School Begins

Gulf Islands Water Park offered a refreshing getaway on a steamy Wednesday.

Whether a shower from above or a blast down the slide, a water park is the perfect place on a day when it feels like 90 before noon.

"Me and my daddy are going on the yellow and red slide," said Shea Gilbert from Alabama.

She's enjoying this last gasp of summer break before starting second grade.

"I'm looking forward to school," she said, "because it's fun."

But not quite as fun as the water park. Time in the water no doubt beats hitting the books. A little out of control fun before the school bells ring.

"Their last chance to come out and have a good time and spend a day at the water park. And attendance this week, we're looking forward to it being real good," said park manager Bob Morgan.

"This is their back to school treat. They get to come here. They start Monday, so this is it for them," said Picayune mother Jeri Harper.

She looks forward to a little down time when children Myah and Mitch start school.

"I feel excited. Because my oldest one is starting kindergarten. My littlest is starting pre-school. So, I get some time to myself," she said.

It's one last chance to ride the slide. Making waves and splashing for fun will soon give way to the orderliness of the classroom.

Rachel Reynolds and Olivia Arnold enjoyed the wet and wild getaway. They're about to start the first grade.

Both admit the water park beats the classroom.

"Because it's fun," Olivia explained.

Just a few more days for such fun remain. Children getting lazy, and crazy before heading back to school.

Manager Bob Morgan says it's been a busy summer season for Gulf Islands. The water park resumes its "weekends only" schedule on August 13th.
