New Voting Machines On Display At Jackson County M&M Banks

Mississippi voters can get a preview of the new technology waiting at the polls this election year. The Secretary of State is offering training sessions at several Merchant and Marine Bank locations in Jackson County.

All counties in South Mississippi will receive the new machines, which are designed to limit the potential for voter fraud and counting errors.

These machines were provided by the Help America Vote Act passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush in 2002.

The machines use touch screens and a telephone-like keypad. They're also handicap accessible.

"The machine is able to move forward a little bit, the tablet is able to come out for someone who might be in a wheelchair. It's easily accessible for them. They can stay seated and do it that way. Also, we have headphones for someone that might be blind. They can put them on and we have a keypad for them that's real similar to the telephone keys," Outreach Coordinator Samantha Lewis said.

You can test out the machines yourself later this week. Demonstrations will be at the Merchants and Marine Bank in Ocean Springs this Friday, August 4th and in Gautier on Friday, August 11th. Both events will be held from 12-2pm.
