New Resort To Open In Biloxi

You are looking at the virtual image that will soon come to life on Highway 90 in Biloxi.

The Revelay Condominium Resort, which is expected to do as its name suggests - combine the words "revel" and "play."

"We were gonna roll this out in August of last year, and unfortunately Katrina put a significant crimp in everyone's plans. But we've taken advantage of that last 11 or 12 months to refine amenities, how the interiors are gonna work," said Sterling Companies' vice president of pre-construction Kent Petersmeyer.

And they have come up with 17 floors filled with condos and hotel suites, a water park, a cafe', as well as business and conference facilities.

This idea is what was celebrated Thursday afternoon on the nine acre site.

But while this project will serve as a vacation getaway of sorts, it will also become a business venture with the Coast Coliseum.

"The Revelay project is going to be very instrumental in the success of the facility. And the fact that Revelay is coming on with first class accommodations and rooms, it's going to be within a three minute walk to the convention center. It's terrific for them. It's terrific for us, and it's terrific for the entire Gulf Coast," said coliseum director Bill Holmes.

Holmes says people have already started to call the convention center, wondering when the Revelay will open in order for them to start booking events.

So, the resort is already helping to bring business into an area that desperately needs the revenue, and that is what developers say was the goal.

"We're just so proud to be able to contribute to the rebirth of this area. We take it very seriously. All of the employees are home-grown, and we're just looking forward to the community's support," said Petersmeyer.

Construction on the Revelay is scheduled to begin later this year.

The resort is expected to be completed by Spring of 2009.

All lanes of Highway 90 are now open. A Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman says an 18-wheeler crossed the median on Interstate 10 Thursday morning, causing a deadly series of accidents. It was just before 6:00 a.m. That truck was heading west near the Ocean Springs exit. Suddenly, it veered left, crossed the median and smashed into a motorcycle on the eastbound side of I-10. The MHP spokesman says that motorcycle driver died at the scene.

We are not strangers to flooding on the Mississippi Coast. Nor are our neighbors to the west in Louisiana. There are forever ongoing efforts, planning and discussions about how to mitigate flooding. But a recent study by the Rand Corporation is more than a little disturbing.
