Turkey Creek Head Start Center Reopens

A school that helps young children get a head start in education celebrated a new beginning Tuesday. More than 100 people turned out Tuesday morning for the grand re-opening of the Turkey Creek Head Start Center on Rippy Road.

The building took in almost six feet of water during Katrina. More than 200 volunteers with the Indiana-based Free Methodist Compassion Group spent months rebuilding the facility. They removed the mud, debris and spoiled food, repaired the building, and donated the supplies.

"Had it not been for so many volunteers, had it not been for so much perseverence, had it not been for sweat and tears and prayers, this would not be possible today," said Napoleon Leverette with the Gulf Coast Community Action Agency

"I just think about how we've been able to help get to the place where these children can be back in the preparation for school, because if they lose out on one year, it's like losing out on a lifetime," said Louis Bunn with the Free Methodist Compassion Group.

The Turkey Creek Head Start Center will officially open for students on August 9th.
