Possible Zoning Changes in Biloxi

The stretch of land North of Highway 90 from Holly to Kuhn street, and the area between Debuys Road and Gateway Drive are potential sites for casino expansion in Biloxi. But in order to get the ball rolling the city needs to rezone the areas as waterfront districts.

That's why Ward four councilman Mike Fitzpatrick is pushing for the planning commission to study the issue.

"This is nothing new there is three projects on the coast already that have been approved in this manner. One is the Oasis project which I believe is Island View, Treasure Bay Hotel, and also the President broadwater," says Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick says if the property is rezoned it would attract billion dollar casino resort projects like the Tivoli and the Casablanca to Biloxi.

"Most importantly these two projects will generate 9 million dollars a year in advalorem taxes for the school system here in Biloxi. And also it will generate about 9 million dollars a year to Harrison County for their schools and safety departments," says Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick is asking the planning commission to hold public hearings to discuss the rezoning issue. If the projects are approved by the Planning Commission and the City Council, the next step would be getting the green light from the gaming commission.

"The Gaming Commission looks at each project on a case by case basis. This project has no buildings whatsoever on the sand beach. It wont interfere with anybody," says Fitzpatrick.

He says if approved the Planning Commission will hold a meeting in 3 weeks to discuss the possibility of re-zoning both areas.
