CMR Certifies Seven Saltwater Sport Fishing Records

Seven anglers recently set seven new Mississippi saltwater sportfishing records for Saltwater Conventional Tackle and Saltwater Fly Fishing Tackle.

Conventional Tackle:

  • Scott Floyd of Lucedale broke the state record for Lookdown June 4 weighing 2 pounds, 9.6 ounces surpassing the previous record of 1 pound, 13.60 ounces set in 2004
  • Donald Simmons, Jr. of Pass Christian broke the state record for Greater Amberjack July 3 weighing 99 pounds, 6 ounces surpassing the previous record of 93 pounds, 4 ounces set in 1989
  • Terry Adams of Dewy Rose, Ga., set a new state record for Atlantic Cutlassfish July 2 weighing 1 pound, 4.48 ounces
  • Ross Maxwell of Biloxi set a new state record for Remora July 2 weighing 5 pounds, 5 ounces
  • Jeffrey Newburg of Gulfport set a new state record for Bank Seabass July 2 weighing 9.28 ounces
  • Tony Delatorre of Biloxi set a new state record for Nurse Shark July 3 weighing 98 pounds, 7 ounces.        

Fly Fishing Tackle:

  • Steve Coignet of Biloxi broke the state record for Spotted Seatrout June 25 weighing 5 pounds, 4.8 ounces surpassing the previous record of 4 pounds, 6.7 ounces set in 2002.

The Commission on Marine Resources certified all seven new records during its July 18 meeting. The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and conserving marine interests of the State by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economic uses of these resources consistent with environmental concerns and social changes.
