Stewart Takes Over As MGCCC Vice President For Administration

These days, it's tough to catch up with Dr. Billy Stewart.

One day he may be getting his affairs in order at his old job as dean of Copiah-Lincoln Community College's Simpson County Center. The next day Stewart could be trying to look ahead to his new position as vice president for Administration at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

However, on this day he's traveling to Pascagoula with his wife and four children for a weekend all-star baseball tournament. He said he's supporting his family just like they did when he told them he was changing jobs.

"I need their support," Stewart said. "I won't sacrifice my family life to pursue any professional goals."

Stewart starts at Gulf Coast on August 1. He replaces Dr. Hal Higdon, who is now president of Ozarks Technical College in Springfield, Mo.

While at Co-Lin, Stewart spent eight years as dean of Community Services before moving to the college's Mendenhall campus.

"I'm sad to leave, but it was time professionally to make this move," Stewart said. "I've always admired and respected the people at Gulf Coast. In the past, every contact I've had with them has been positive. So I know I can work with these folks."

Stewart also said the transition should be easier thanks to the work put in by his predecessor.

"Professionally, this is a huge challenge," Stewart said. "The good news is, I'm blessed with some great people and I inherit a firm foundation set by Dr. Higdon. The post-Katrina era presents so many challenges. Any college that can go through a storm like Katrina and re-open 17 days after it hit is amazing. It proves that their commitment to the students is un-paralleled. I look forward to working with them."

Stewart's arrival is one of several front office staff changes at Gulf Coast. Here is a list of the other personnel changes:

Dr. Joseph Cliburn---Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs at Central Office
Misty Maaya---Director of Institutional Relations
Larry Miller---Dean of Instruction, Jefferson Davis Campus
Michelle Sekul---Dean of Student Services, Perkinston Campus
Lynn Ladner---Director of Institutional Research and Planning
Jennifer Leimer---Director of Distance Learning
Buffy Matthews---Distance Learning Coordinator
Ladd Taylor ---Director of Admissions
