Keesler Air Force Base hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday to mark the opening of the new Armed Services Blood Program Donor Center. It's one of only three blood donor centers in the Air Force.
The new facility is more spacious than the old center. It provides a more efficient operation, and offers a safer supply of blood for the military.
"We collect blood for the troops that have to go down range, that are overseas, fighting the battles. A lot of the blood we collect does allow people to come home that maybe wouldn't come home if we didn't have it here. We'd have to be self-sufficient in our own operations," Medical Director Dr. Daniel Smith said.
