Gulfport Freedom Fest Draws Families To Jones Park

When the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo moved to the fairgrounds, Gulfport lost more than a bunch of fishermen hanging out at Rice Pavilion. It lost an annual event that brought hundreds of families to the banks of the Mississippi Sound.

Monday, the city hosted a party that tried to lure some of those families back to the Jones Park area.

Gulfport called its July third celebration Freedom Fest 2006. One of the highlights was a children's fishing rodeo.

"I think it's good. I'm glad they're having something. We're from Long Beach and we're not having anything over there. And it's good that they're having something over here for the kids and for everybody to have a good time," Jan Currie said.

Freedom Fest 2006 wraps up Monday night with Gulfport's "Fire in the Sky" fireworks show. The pyrotechnic display begins at 8:45pm.
