HEAVY RAINS TO BLAME

Oyster Season Shut Down

Oyster season started just two weeks ago, and already, most areas are off-limits to fishermen. The Department of Marine Resources has closed all Mississippi oyster reefs until further notice, due to excessive run-off caused by recent heavy rainfall.

The only area that remains open to oyster harvesting is Area Two Approved Waters. That includes Telegraph and Buoy Reefs, the Shell Keys, and the southern portion of Pass Marianne Reef.

The D.M.R. is testing the waters, to determine when it's safe to re-open the other reefs.
