New Jail On The Way

George County Sheriff George Miller Sr. says overcrowded prisons should become less of an issue next year when a new regional jail opens in his county. The 331 bed George County Regional Correctional Facility will have 75 of its 331 beds set aside for George and Greene County prisoners, Miller said.

The George County Jail currently has 20 beds, but as many as 40-50 prisoners have been incarcerated at one time, Miller said. He said he only holds state prisoners awaiting trials. The regional facility will be accredited under an order issued by the federal government in 1981 that requires city and county jails that house state inmates to provide adequate services.

Darwin Maples, attorney for the George County Board of Supervisors, said federal accreditation should help the county avoid lawsuits since most inmate complaints against accredited jails are thrown out. The regional jail's anticipated completion date is May 5.
