Fire Forces Evacuations At DeLisle Elementary School

A fire burning near DeLisle Elementary School Wednesday afternoon is now under control.

Harrison County Fire Marshall George Mixon said the fire had been threatening the school and nearby trailers. In fact, Mixon says about 40 students and staff from a summer program at DeLisle Elementary were evacuated for a short while.

Mixon said the fire was contained at the intersection of Kiln-Delisle and Cuevas-Delisle Roads and no longer poses any danger. Still, crews will remain on the scene to monitor the situation.

The Pascagoula Panthers open the 2017 football season on the road. In fact, their first three games are road contests. That scheduling quirk may give field turf crews just enough time to get War Memorial Stadium ready for the September 8 home opener. The wet weather in South Mississippi is placing quite the burden on construction workers as they attempt to complete stadium renovations. The project was suppose to be finished before the beginning of Pascagoula's football season.
