Jackson County Schools Meet Federal Challenge For Healthy Meals

Jackson County schools are among the best in the country for serving healthful foods.

An under secretary from the USDA visited the school district headquarters in Vancleave Thursday. Kate Coler presented awards to four different schools for meeting the federal government's "Healthier U.S. School Challenge."

Representatives from East Central Upper and Lower Elementary schools, along with Vancleave Upper and Lower Elementary schools accepted the awards. The recognition means the schools are offering their students healthy food choices.

"We try to do that by offering a lot of different varieties. We have three choices of vegetables every day, three choices of fruit. And always have two entrees or a fruit and yogurt salad or a chef salad every day," Food Service Director Lark Christian said.

The Jackson County schools are among just 91 schools nationwide that achieved the healthy food honors.
