Ocean Springs Residents React To Waterfront Designs

Ocean Springs residents were filled with anxiety as their own ideas were presented to them in full view Thursday evening.

Dover, Kohl and Partners debuted drawings of how architects interpreted comments made by the residents earlier this week.

And it's now up to these residents to determine if the planners were on the right track.

The presentation centered around the city's waterfront area, like Plummer's Point, the Ocean Springs harbor, and Front Beach Drive - places the project's director says the people want to continue to maintain the city's character.

"We've been trying to get a real community consensus for what people want to see in Ocean Springs. And we've had a really open process where the doors have been open to the neighbors from day one. We came here on Monday, then we spent a couple days really just finding out what people wanted," said project director Andrew Zitofsky.

And based on the reviews following the presentation, it seems like the planners have come up with the right ideas.

"I thought it was a wonderful presentation. They incorporated alot of the property owners ideas, and my favorite part was the harbor area and how they re-routed the traffic and saved the beautiful oak trees on the Martin property and left a lot of green space," said Laura Bolton.

"I think the whole project was so well done and so carefully thought out. If we can finance it, it will be a wonderful project," said Richard Furr.

"I particularly liked the plan for the development of the Martin property and the end of Washington Avenue because it's graceful and in keeping with the ambiance of Ocean Springs," said Mary Alice Miner.

The planners took more suggestions from residents Thursday night.

With that information, they plan to refine the drawings and come back in another 4 to 6 weeks to make recommendations to the city.
