Pascagoula Names Municipal Building For Late Mayor

Pascagoula City Hall has a new name. It's now the Joe D. Cole Junior Municipal Building, named for the city's late mayor Joe Cole.

Cole served the city for 16 years and was only the second mayor to ever get re-elected in the city's history.

At the ceremony Monday, Cole's widow Cherie said her husband would be humbled by the honor. She said he joked about having a street named after him, but said Joe Street was probably the closest he'd ever get.

Mayor Matthew Avara said Pascagoula is a better place because of Joe Cole.

"Joe's looking down on us right now. He's probably humbled and maybe even a little mad. He deserves the recognition and so I'm in favor of naming a street after him. We should probably be changing it from Joe Street to Cole Street," Avara said.

Cole had a heart attack in March of last year. He died in July at the age of 56.
