Saddle Up For A Good Cause

It's an event where they measure excitement by the ton. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is inviting everyone to saddle up for their fifth Annual Sheriff's Rodeo this weekend.

The two day event, sanctioned by the Professional Cowboy Association, features a full range of rodeo excitement - from bull riding to bronco busting and even Barrel Racing.

The event benefits the Jackson County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol and Sheriff's Reserve.

"We've had numerous occasions where we had search and rescue operations where you could not get into a particular area and we've had to call the mounted patrol. They have horses, they have AVTs. The reserves, they come out and work in functions for us, like when we have people out sick," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said.

The mounted patrol and reserve volunteered more than 6,000 hours of work in the month following Katrina alone, and provided a majority of their own equipment and funding.

The Rodeo begins at 7:30 Friday night and Saturday night at the Vancleave Horse Arena on Ball Park Road.
