Burn Ban Lifted In Many Areas Of South Mississippi

The recent rains have led some areas to lift the burn bans that have been in effect for almost two months. The burn bans have been lifted in Harrison, Hancock, Jackson, and Pearl River Counties, as well as the city of Gautier.

Harrison County Fire Marshal George Mixon says people should be very careful if they decide to burn debris. If you do burn, please follow these safety tips:

  • Keep the fire at least 100 feet away from any structure.
  • Keep a hose or backhoe nearby in case the fire gets out of hand.
  • Have a responsible person attending the fire at all times until it's out.
  • Make sure your fire is out before sundown.

Authorities in all areas say they'll be monitoring the situation and could re-instate the burn bans if the area dries out again.
