MTV, United Way Bring "Storm Corps" Volunteers To Biloxi

Members of "Storm Corps " are spending this week gutting houses, trimming trees, and repairing roofs. Monday the volunteers were in East Biloxi.

Storm Corps is a partnership between MTV and the United Way to rebuild neighborhoods that were damaged by hurricanes and inspire young people to sign up for community service.

More than 2,000 students from all over the country applied for the program, but only 100 were chosen.

"I knew there was a lot of assistance that was needed down here. And, actually, I was looking for something to do on spring break, and thought I can make a difference at the same time, and come down here. Saw a commercial on MTV and just applied and here I am," Illinois Volunteer Scott Dennison said.

Besides working on homes, the volunteers will also repair and clean-up several United Way agencies like the Moore Community House and South Mississippi Aids Task Force.

MTV's web site describes the program as an alternative Spring Break, "designed to live on longer than just the week of rebuilding. Upon return home, participants will be encouraged to share their experiences in the Gulf Coast with their communities."
