Cole Repairs Moving Ahead

The U-S-S Cole was moved over the Labor Day weekend to the Ingalls Shipyard's floating drydock. Ingalls officials say the Aegis destroyer will be prepared for a September 15th launch.

Once on the water, Ingalls will continue work on the repairs. Northrop Grumman Ship Systems moved the ship over land by a system of electrically powered cars traveling over rails. The ship arrived at Ingalls on December 13th, 2000, from Aden, Yemen, and was moved on land where she has remained during the restoration.

Shipbuilders have completed the structural replacements and repairs. Ingalls says the ship is on schedule to be redelivered to the U-S Navy next spring. The Navy destroyer was damaged last October by a terrorist bomb in Yemen. The blast killed 17 U-S sailors.
