While Spanish and French are popular foreign languages at some schools, students at Grace Christian School are becoming fluent in Latin. Teacher Melissa Nash said the main reason Latin is taught at the school is that most English words are derived from it.
``We teach it to help the students have a better understanding of the English language and to expand their vocabulary,'' Nash said. Latin is considered to be the mother tongue and is the umbrella for many other languages, including French and Italian, she said. Nash said the third and fourth-graders are learning phrases, prayers and songs in Latin. ``Mea culpa is my favorite Latin phrase,'' said fourth grader Jeffrey Sherril. ``It means my fault or I'm guilty.''
