Residents Apply For Habitat For Humanity

Darvy Matthews hopes this application will be just the tool she needs to obtain something she's always wanted.

"Well, I have three kids. I'm a single mom, and it's time for me to just do something. You know, try to get my kids in a better environment and try to purchase me a home because I'm not getting younger, I'm getting older," said Matthews.

Matthews is one of dozens who went through an application process at Calling All Christians Church. And applications could lead to moving into a brand new home.

Habitat For Humanity usually builds about four homes each year to deserving families in Jackson County. This year -with help from the national office - there will be more homes to offer.

"We're supposed to be getting some of what they're calling 'houses in a box' that they've actually put the walls up somewhere else and they're gonna bring down, and bring crews to help get these homes built. So we're hoping that we'll have a lot of help, and that we'll be able to get quite a few homes built this year for families," said Family Selection Committee Chair Cindy Pritchard.

Families will help build theirs and others' homes and will pay the mortgage. Pritchard says it is all worth it in the end.

"It's just incredible... We've talked to them, but they don't know that they've been selected and that's the part that makes all the hard work worth it, when you see their faces and when you tell them that they are gonna get a home," said Pritchard.

And Darvy Matthews cannot wait for the day she hears those words.

"We're gonna cry because we're ready for a home. We really are. We're ready for a home."

After Thursday night's process, the Family Selection Committee will go through applications to see if income requirements are met.
