The second annual Mississippi Fish and Wildlife Expo wrapped up in Hattiesburg Sunday, but organizers say the outdoor industry continues to grow stronger than ever.
Mississippi Fish and Wildlife Foundation Director James Cummins says 40 percent of Mississippi residents either hunt, fish or both. In Mississippi alone, he says purchases made for hunting and fishing gear translate into about $1.2 billion.
Retailers in the industry say one reason for that growth is that they've begun targeting the whole family with products like camouflage clothing for women and children and a variety of other products.
The event saw dramatic growth this year, with thousands more people coming to do business with the more than 100 exhibitors with booths.
