Bay St. Louis & Waveland Leaders To Discuss Merger

Should the two cities in Hancock County, Bay St. Louis and Waveland, become one? A partial or complete merger will be seriously discussed by city leaders Wednesday night.

Hurricane Katrina devastated both cities, destroying much of the infrastructure and tax base. Bay St. Louis Mayor Eddie Favre says if ever there was a time to consider consolidation, the time is now.

"The most important thing that needs to be looked at is not necessarily the money, but provision of services. If it's a way to provide better services to the people, then I think that's the most important thing. Hopefully tomorrow night we'll come up with that answer. Hopefully it will be with looking at the idea of a total consolidation, total merger," Favre said.

"If it's beneficial to the people, let's do it. If it's not, then let's look at consolidating certain services."

Those services would include police and fire protection.

The meeting between Bay St. Louis and Waveland city leaders will be held Wednesday night at 6:30 at the Waveland Municipal Complex on Coleman Avenue.
