Coast Doctor Survives Collision With Train

A well-known Coast physician is lucky to be alive after his sport-utility vehicle was struck by a train.

Dr. Douglas Lanier was listed in stable condition at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport following the accident. Police say he was heading south on Broad Avenue in Gulfport around 4 p.m. when his vehicle was hit by a train heading west.

The impact knocked the SUV roughly 30 feet from the accident took place. Both air bags deployed, and the collision knocked the rear left tire off the vehicle. Lanier was the only person in the vehicle.

    School district risk assessments have to be done every year. It’s required by state law. But for the next school term, an independent study by the Harrison County Sheriff's Office through the perspective of students could make the county school district safer.
