Officers Indicted in Malone Case Suspended Without Pay

Moss Point's struggling economy is one of the reasons two police officers, indicted with manslaughter in the death of Marcus Malone, will lose their pay.

Last night, the city Board of Aldermen voted to suspend officers Chris Weeks and Derrick Welton without pay. A third officer charged in the case Steve Strickler is a reserve officer and is not on the department's payroll. Malone was found dead in the city jail in 1999, after being arrested by the officers, for a traffic and drug violation.

The Aldermen say with the recent layoffs and plant closings in the community, it would be a financial burden, to keep paying the officers, while they are awaiting trial. Their trial date, has not been set.
