For many motorists traveling on Pass Road Thursday afternoon, this sign posted at Veterans Avenue was a sight for sore eyes.
"I think it's great. I think it's great. It's gonna relieve a lot of the traffic problems that we have," said one motorist.
And that's the reason why the city of Biloxi decided to make Veterans Avenue an access route to I-110.
From 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday, Highway 90 at Veterans will be opened for drivers to travel eastbound toward the I-110 loop.
"We've had major problems with traffic. We opened Porter, and that helped a little bit but traffic was still backing up on Irish Hill, sometimes all the way past the school, just by the volume of the traffic. Most of the people that are used to using Highway 90 or I-10 or some other way are stuck only using Pass Road or Irish Hill now so its a higher volume of traffic. We tried that. It didn't work real well so we're trying something else," said Biloxi Police Department Sgt. Jackie Rhodes.
"It's helping the traffic flow better. It was backed up but it's getting through better now," said A Biloxi motorist.
This route is expected to ease the after-work and after-school traffic.
"I mean the traffic over here is unreal. We just come over here for 30 minutes to measure a job. It takes us longer to get here than it did to measure the job," said another motorist.
But police officers warn motorists that once you get on Highway 90 from Veterans - there is no sightseeing, no stopping, and no detours on side streets.
"Once you get on Highway 90 at Veterans, the only option that you have is to go east and go across 110. If your intention is not to go across north on 110, then you need to stay off of Veterans and stay off of Highway 90," said Sgt. Rhodes.
