Legislators Disagree Over Redistricting

Two members of a redistricting committee disagree over whether Lauderdale County and the Gulf Coast should be in the same congressional district.

Representative George Flaggs of Vicksburg says it makes sense to put the two in same district because they both have military bases. Senator Terry Burton of Newton disagrees.

Burton's district includes part of Lauderdale County. He says the Legislature should consider the Interstate 20 corridor as an area with common economic interest.

Burton and Flaggs spoke today at a luncheon sponsored by the Capitol press corps and Mississippi State University's John C. Stennis Institute of Government.

The Legislature is expected to meet in special session this summer to redraw the state's five congressional districts into four.
