Funeral service for former Pascagoula police chief announced

PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -

Pascagoula residents and city leaders are mourning the passing of former Police Chief Michael R. Whitmore. Whitmore died Tuesday around 3 pm from natural causes.

"He's a great guy, and we're gonna miss him," says Pascagoula Mayor Dane Maxwell. The city of Pascagoula will fly flags at half-staff Wednesday through Friday,” he said.

Whitmore was a retired Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army and served as Campus Police Chief for the Pascagoula School District. He retired as Pascagoula Police Chief in 2007.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell says Holder Wells Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Friday August 10th, 2018 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pascagoula, with the Pascagoula Police Department conducting honors. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 pm with Father Mike Kelleher officiating. Burial will follow with Full Military Honors provided by the United States Army.
