Canoe Riders Rescued

Stone County Sheriff Mike Ballard credits help from a helicopter with finding three people missing from a canoe trip. The three rented a canoe in Perkinston Sunday afternoon for a 7 and a half mile float down Red Creek. The sheriff's department got a call when the trio didn't make to the end of the route.

Sheriff Ballard called for help from the Harrison County Sheriff's department helicopter. Ballard says the people had little experience canoeing, and told rescuers they flipped the canoe about 18 times before deciding to give up and try to walk out.

Several agencies assisted in the search, but the sheriff says without help from the air, they'd probably still be looking. Ballard says the three people were not hurt, except for being bitten up by mosquitos.
