Pipline Rupture Shuts Down Hwy. 49 Southbound Lanes On Sunday

A rupture in an oil pipeline shut down both southbound lanes of Highway 49 just south of Hattiesburg for most of the day Sunday.

Hattiesburg police say a man was using a road grater when he hit an oil pipeline around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Both southbound lanes were closed until around 4 p.m. when one lane was re-opened.

Officials say that between 5,000 and 10,000 gallons of oil were spilled. The cleanup could take up to a week.

Oil leaked into the woods and a nearby creek, and the Coast Guard was on the scene to see how badly the creek was polluted. The state Department of Environmental Quality also came to asses the damage.
