Ingalls Receives Funds To Continue Assault Ship

Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding has been awarded $81.3 million by the U.S. Navy to continue construction on an assault ship, Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., announced Friday.

The deal is a modification to $196.5 million cost-plus-fixed-fee contract awarded to Ingalls in May to build an LHD-8, amphibious assault ship, Lott said.

The modification is for materials, design and construction of the LHD-8, the eighth in a series of new amphibious assault vehicles being built at Ingalls. Work on the LHD-8 is expected to be complete by December, 2003.
