BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - A local resident was on his way to work this morning when he became involved in a convenience store robbery attempt.
He not only witnessed the robbery, he tracked the suspects as they fled the scene.
The witness works in construction and says he was about to pull into the Popps-Ferry Convenience store around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
"I just thought I'll go ahead and grab a bag of ice before work," he said. "Mr. Lee's about to open up. I know him well."
At that time, the suspects involved in this morning's robbery were also headed to the store. "I actually saw a car pull up, and three guys were wearing shirts over their faces," he said. "It looked kind of weird. They went inside the store, and I noticed it's a robbery."
The witness said he stayed in the turn lane near the store, saw the whole incident happen, then watched as the suspects fled the scene.
"They all got in the car," he added. "I was still there, and I turned around to see if I could block them, and I followed them."
He went after them down Lamey Bridge to Brodie Road, where he says the suspect's car turned left, then did a U-turn and headed back west on Brodie, where they turned north on Cedar Lake Road.
"I thought if I just maybe stayed behind them and get one of the cops behind me, they could do their job to get those guys," he said.
Which, they eventually did, thanks to his impromptu pursuit.
