CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) -

Recovery has been a long, hard road for Irma Nelson in the years since she suffered from a stroke.

When Meagan Denny learned from Irma’s caretaker that sometimes the only thing Irma wants is a letter, she knew exactly what to do.

Denny works as a camp counselor at Island Time Drop-n-Play daycare in Carolina Beach. Coincidentally, the theme of the week at the daycare was “helping our island.” So, she came up with the idea to have her campers write letters to mail to Irma to help her in her recovery.

“Some said ‘We care.’ And some were ‘Get well soon,'” Denny said. “And some people just wrote about their lives, and what we did that day. And some drew pictures.”

Denny then had the idea to make this project bigger than Carolina Beach. So she posted about it on Facebook.

“When I first learned about Irma, I was like, ‘Let’s see how many letters we can get for her,” Denny said. “So I went to one of my bosses and said, ‘Let’s do it huge.’”

As of Tuesday, the Facebook post has over 350 shares from people across the country.

Irma received the first round of letters on Monday.

“It just warmed my heart. It really did," she said.

Irma did not know that the Island Time daycare was doing this for her so the letters were a pleasant surprise for her Monday.

“It just was precious,” Irma said. “It brightened a mediocre day to something really special.”

Irma said the letters were overwhelming, but in a good way, of course.

“Why do I deserve this? I’m sure there’s several hundreds of people out there that could – but – it was me and I thought that was very warming,” Irma said. “A big thank you. A big thank you.”
