TS Chris to become hurricane off NC coast

(RNN) - Tropical Storm Chris is expected to become a hurricane Tuesday off the coast of North Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 210 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, NC, in its 11 p.m. ET report on Monday.

Sustained winds were around 70 mph at the time of the NHC report, and the storm was stationary.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, but the NHC warns that "interests along the coast of North Carolina and in the Canadian Maritimes should monitor the progress of this system."

The storm isn't expected to change position very much Monday night. It's expected to begin moving to the northeast on Tuesday, and to accelerate northeastward on Wednesday and Thursday.

Chris is the third tropical system of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. The remnants of tropical system Beryl is moving over the northeastern Caribbean Sea, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, producing heavy rainfall and strong winds in those areas, the NHC stated Monday.
