GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

After being closed for nearly 24 hours, the Wilkes Bridge on Cowan-Lorraine Road in Gulfport is back open.

The bridge was closed early Sunday afternoon due to a malfunction. It re-opened shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday. MDOT officials say the bridge had both electrical and mechanical malfunctions. Whenever something doesn't work properly on the bridge, said MDOT spokesman Jason Scott, it locks into position as a safety precaution. Workers had to make the part to fix it, which is why the bridge remained closed until Monday morning.

Wilkes Bridge, which is at least 20 years old, has seen similar issues like this in the past. Scott said it's just a part of what MDOT must deal with due to the age of the bridge and its mechanics. Scott said there is a plan in works to replace all of the bridge's aging parts but was not able to go into detail about it.

Hydraulics experts began working on the bridge Monday morning. Barricades were in place on both sides, forcing drivers to turn around and find an alternative route.

The Wilkes Bridge is one only four north-south corridors, running directly from I-10 to Highway 90. The three alternate routes include Highway 49, I-110, and Menge Avenue. According to MDOT, an estimated 32,000 vehicles cross the Wilkes bridge each day.

WLOX's Christina Garcia was reporting live from the then-closed bridge Monday morning when she was nearly ran over by one driver who failed to notice all of the signs and blockades. Watch below beginning at 3:57. PLEASE pay attention to roadwork signs when you're driving!
