MCCOMB, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Governor Phil Bryant announced this week he is establishing a school safety task force. The move comes in the wake of several recent school shootings across the country.

“It is very important that the kids come to school and feel safe.,” said assistant safety director Marcus Gatlin.

Gatlin and Gregory Gilmore help run the school district security team in McComb. They take their job seriously especially with the outbreak of school shootings nationwide.

“It hurts my heart," said Safety Director Gregory Gilmore. "The first thing that comes to mind is I don't want my school to be like that so what we have to do is prepare by any means necessary.”

The team has been beefing up their efforts to keep more 2,500 hundred students safe.

“Getting out to different locations, showing our face, getting familiarized with the kids, joining with the chief of police and sheriff's department,” said Gatlin.

“If you take the information prior to the guy getting a gun before he brings it on campus, that is the goal of our school district,” added Gilmore.

The security team is pleased Gov. Phil Bryant signed an executive order Tuesday to create a special task force to increase safety at schools.

“The old days of law enforcement and wearing a gun, it takes more than that,” said Gilmore.

Public Safety Commissioner Marshall Fisher will lead the group.  Bryant says this task force will be made up of representatives from the law enforcement, education, and mental health communities.

The members will evaluate existing school safety laws and policies and make recommendations to strengthen them.

“As I was growing up, we use to say it takes a village to raise a family," added Gatlin. "It is going to take the community, the whole state, and all of us coming together to make sure all our schools are safe.”

Both Gatlin and Gilmore are optimistic the task force will produce results.

“Like I tell my guys all the time, I need results,” said Gilmore.

“It is easier to learn when if you come to school and know you are safe; you don't have to worry about someone harming you,” added Gatlin.
