Fire marshal: Man tried to burn down house over debt

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A 36-year-old Louisiana man is accused of trying to burn a house his brother was renovating, then confronting his brother's employees at other properties - once, with a machete.

The state fire marshal's spokeswoman, Ashley Rodrigue, says New Orleans police Wednesday arrested Mazen Hamdan on charges of criminal damage and escape. She said Thursday that the fire marshal plans an arson charge.

Rodrigue says the Gretna man's brother told investigators Hamdan barged in Wednesday, demanding payment, then threatened to burn the house and poured gasoline on the floor. Hamdan's brother said he knocked a lighter out of his brother's hands, and Hamdan went to the other sites.

After a traffic stop, Hamdan allegedly told police he felt ill, then tried to run when an ambulance arrived.

It was unclear whether he has an attorney.
