Reading scores continue to rise for MS third-graders

Third-grade reading scores for spring 2018 are in, and Mississippi students, parents and educators should be pleased as scores continue to rise, according to a report from the Mississippi Department of Education.

For the 2017-2018 school year, 93.2 percent of Mississippi third-graders met or exceeded requirements for the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program English Language Arts Assessment. That number is up from 92 percent in 2017 and just 87 percent in 2016.

In the Pine Belt, 10 school districts had passing rates of 95 percent or higher. You can find the full breakdown of Pine Belt school district passing rates below:

Passed in 2013, the Literacy-Based Promotion Act requires third-grade students to pass a “reading gate” test before moving on to the fourth-grade. Students scoring at the lowest achievement level on the assessment will not be promoted unless they qualify for a good cause exemption.
