Ex-Mississippi House hopeful pleads guilty to illegal voting

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi attorney who ran for the state House last year has pleaded guilty to voting outside his legal district.

Attorney General Jim Hood says in a release that 28-year-old Cory Ferraez was sentenced Monday to six months in county jail, with all six months suspended. It says Ferraez illegally voted in Lowndes County in 2015 while he was living in Hattiesburg.

WDAM-TV reports Ferraez was arrested in December when a grand jury indicted him of swearing to a false application for absentee ballot and voting outside his legal domicile. The first charge was dropped as part of the plea deal.

Ferraez unsuccessfully ran for Hattiesburg District 102 state representative in 2017. WDAM cites a statement by Ferraez's attorney and brother Jace Ferraez that says the charges are "politically motivated."
