Mississippi city files petition to nearly double land area

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi city has filed a petition for annexation that would nearly double its land area.

The Oxford Eagle reports that the city filed its petition on April 26. The city is seeking to annex about 12 square miles (31 square kilometers) of unincorporated Lafayette County into the city limits.

The Oxford Board of Aldermen voted on April 3 to approve an ordinance announcing the city's intent to expand the corporate limit boundaries of Oxford. They also gave Oxford City Attorney Pope Mallette permission then to file the petition.

A judge must approve the petition before the annexation is completed.

Mayor Robyn Tannehill says that the city hopes to encourage affordable housing in new areas. The annexation won't affect boundaries of the Oxford school district.
