Residents in Biloxi and Gulfport wonder when the power will be restored to the region and sadly the news is not good.

Officials with several utility companies say it will be four to six weeks before the lights are restored to this area of Mississippi.

Patients Moved

Because of the lack of lights Select Special Hospital has moved all of its patients to hospitals in Jackson, Mississippi and Birmingham, Alabama.

If you have a loved one that was admitted to Select Specialty you can call these numbers to find out where they have been transferred to 601-376-2501 or 205-599-4600.

Employees of Select Specialty Hospital should report to work at Gulfport Hospital.

On Wednesday emergency officials released figures of those killed in the area.

  • 17 people died in Hancock County
  • 10 people died in Jackson County
  • 56 people died in Harrison County
  • 17 people died in Pearl River County

Crews are working around the clock searching for survivors.

Highway 90, the major freeway that runs through the area, has been destroyed. Police are keeping everyone off the road - no one is allowed to drive on the road.

Airport Notes

Officials with the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport have reopened the runway to military and private planes only.

They are hoping commercial flights will be flying in and out of the airport sometime next week.

Permanent Shelters

So many families have lost everything that emergency officials have opened permanent shelters.

Anyone seeking a place to stay can go to either East Central High School and Vancleave High School.

If you evacuated before Hurricane Katrina landed and are thinking of returning to the region emergency officials say you must bring your own supplies - that includes food, bedding, toiletries, water.
