BRAC: Navy Center Will Stay In Hancock County

Thursday's BRAC hearing also had good news for Hancock County. Commissioners voted to keep the Navy's Shared Services Center in Hancock County open.

The Navy Center is located at Stennis and employs 158 people.

The Pentagon put it on the list saying it could save money by moving the operations to another resource center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But community leaders fought to keep the center open.

"We had the highest military score of any of the human resources service centers in the Navy, so that was an argument. Cost, we can do it cheaper in South Mississippi. We've got a lower cost of living here and it's defiantly lower than Philadelphia. And so when you actually line the numbers up and you make a case, the details were there. The details showed that Stennis is the place to do business," Chuck Benvenutti with the group Partners For Stennis said.

The Navy Center in Hancock County opened seven years ago and handles personnel records for thousands of Navy workers in the Southeast.
