OS Harbor Closed To Anchoring Boats During Storms

Boat owners seeking safety from a storm will no longer be allowed to drop anchor in the Ocean Springs Harbor. The Jackson County Board of Supervisors approved the prohibition at this week's meeting.

The harbor does provide a natural sanctuary from heavy wind and waves during storms. However, the muddy bottom makes it ill suited for anchoring during a storm. Anchored boats could actually do some damage.

"We're afraid that if a boat comes in and anchors, especially during a storm, that it will break loose and destroy our piers and pilings and the other boats around it. And that's the thing we want to limit," Ocean Springs Harbor Master Johnny Hughes said.

Along with the anchoring restriction, the supervisors also approved a rate increase for visiting boat owners who dock at the Ocean Springs Harbor.
