RVers Hit Hard By High Fuel Prices

Many of you have had to dig deep in your pockets to fill up the gas tank in your car or SUV. Well, imagine how much it costs to fill up an RV.

According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas here in Mississippi is $2.52. A month ago, it was $2.19 a gallon. And this time last year, it was only $1.81.

The high cost of fuel caused one group of Ohio residents to change their travel plans to head west. Instead, they wound up in South Mississippi.

"We were going to head to Las Vegas this year," said RVer Alan Iames.

The Landrys are from Breaux Bridges, Louisiana, a town about 200 miles away from South Mississippi. They say with high fuel prices, they travel half as much in their RV as they used to and they can't afford to go as far away from home as they once did.

"Now if I would have to drive to California or anywhere far right now, I would have to bring part of the bank with me, because that's the only way I could get across country," Marie Landry said.

According to AAA, gas prices in Mississippi are at an all-time high. But RVers we talked to say they consider the cost of fuel here a bargain, compared to other states.

"We were pleasantly surprised to find out that they were less down through the South than they were in Ohio," Iames said.

"Back home, it's even higher than over here. Right now, the gas at home is like $2.50. Here we got some when we came in at $2.47, and today we tanked up at $2.45. So far that's the cheapest that I've seen lately," Landry said.
