12 malpractice suits named new state medical board head

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A newspaper reports that the new head of Mississippi's agency for licensing and disciplining doctors has faced 12 lawsuits alleging malpractice.

The Clarion-Ledger reports that judges dismissed some, but Dr. Kenneth Cleveland settled at least two.

The Mississippi State Board of Licensure recently hired Cleveland as its new executive director. Board president Charles Miles says being sued doesn't mean Cleveland did anything wrong.

Cleveland resigned his surgical privileges in 2011, the year two patients filed complaints that were later settled,

He tells the newspaper through an attorney that he got out of surgery because of back problems.

Cleveland's now CEO and a physician at a medical spa specializing in weight loss and cosmetic non-surgical procedures.

Miles says he and his colleagues found Cleveland the best of 11 candidates.
