School board election set in plan to merge districts

LUMBERTON, Miss. (AP) - A school board election has been set as part of a plan to merge two south Mississippi school districts.

Local media report that the April 26 election for the Lamar County school board includes more than 900 voters on the Pearl River County side of the current Lumberton school district.

Pearl River County officials continue to challenge Lamar County's plan to take over the entire Lumberton district. That move aims to ensure schools stay open in Lumberton.

Lawmakers originally mandated a split between the Poplarville and Lamar County districts. They're currently considering Senate Bill 2170 , ratifying Lamar County's takeover.

Lamar County school board President Jeremy Chance represents the district redrawn to include Lumberton. He plans to seek the seat.

The winner's term begins July 1, lasting until Dec. 31, 2024.
