(WVUE) -

DeMarcus Cousins' season-ending injury has left the Pelicans in need of a boost in talent, if they are to stay alive in the playoff hunt. They currently sit sixth in the Western Conference but Tuesday's reported interested in trading for Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic shows they are eager to improve.

Multiple reports surfaced early in the day that the teams were in conversations about sending Mirotic to New Orleans in exchange for center Omer Asik and the Pelicans' 2018 first round pick but the deal fell apart because New Orleans was not planning to pick up Mirotic's $12.5 million option for the 2018-19 season.

Alvin Gentry spoke before his team's game against the Sacramento Kings about their approach to trades this time of year. "I don't know if 'have to' is the way to do it but I don't think you're going to do anything unless you're convinced that it's something that can make your team better," he said. "I think that's everyone, not just us with the injury. I think everyone is looking to, 'if we do this, it could put us in the playoffs' or 'if we do this, it could put us in a home court playoff situation' so I think there's a lot of different reason why people are in the process of trying to make trades. In our case, we're trying to make our team better and so we'll look and continue to look until the trading deadline."

The NBA trade deadline is Thursday, February 8th.
