BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The city of Biloxi is now more accessible thanks to a brand new bus route. Coast Transit Authority announced the brand new 45 minute Route 32 that travels along Popps Ferry Road.
"We're really looking forward to it. We've been waiting and praying for this bus for a long time," said Gregory Hotaling, a resident at the Santa Maria Del Mar retirement community. The Santa Maria is a main stop along the bus's route.
The route makes a loop from just east of Cedar Lake road down to Pass Road. There are plenty of stops along the route, including grocery stores, medical centers, and apartments.
Councilman Kenny Glavan says the city jumped on board with the plan knowing how many people would potentially use it.
"I think once we told the story that it's going to improve the quality of life for so many citizens in the city of Biloxi, then everything started falling into place," said Glavan.
There will be a six month demonstration period before Route 32 is made official. Kevin Coggin, director of the CTA has a healthy dose of confidence in the plan. "I feel as good about this route as any route I've ever planned.
"There are going to be so many people riding it," said Coggin. "It's going to be an overnight success, no doubt."
If the excitement from the residents at the Santa Maria Del Mar retirement community is any indication, Coggin is probably right.
"I think it's wonderful," said Elsie Goodman while hearing about the route for the first time.
"I'm very, very pleased; very pleased," said Janice Ruland, who has lived at Santa Maria Del Mar for several months and was ready to have the additional access this bus would give her.
"I'm very excited," Ruland continued. "I've seen the buses and the trollies and everything going around and I just think that would be a great way to get around the area."
The route will keep the CTA's standard fare, with a discount for senior citizens. Caretakers get to ride free of charge.
