Biloxi Mayor's Budget Includes Slight Tax Increase

For the first time in years, the proposed budget for the City of Biloxi includes a tax increase.

Tuesday, city council members held their first budget workshop on Mayor A.J. Holloway's $108 million proposal.

If approved, the mayor's budget would mean a tax increase of about $1 a month for the owner of a $100,000 home. Much of the increase would go toward debt service.

The new fiscal year begins October first.

Council members also discussed the mayor's appointments for department directors.

Parks and Recreation Director Nathan Sullivan and Biloxi Fire Chief David Roberts were just two of the mayor's choices. City Council members questioned the men one a number of issues, from upkeep of the city's parks to plans for new fire stations within city limits.

The council is set to vote on the mayor's department head appointees at next Tuesday's meeting.
